My world in Your hands

It's that frustration that has spilled over for months, and it has lay spoilt for quite some time. Frustration at situations, at things, and as a result, people.

I'm becoming someone whom I don't want to be.

In between back-breaking sessions at the comp and snapping at people, is my silent and desperate plea to God to talk to me about my situation. I'm hanging on a thin line about to cut through my fingers.

Finally, at 4.36 a.m today.
"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?" - Matthew 16:25-26
Ah, finally.

The King has spoken.

And I've new words to ponder over this weekend.

:')

Here I stand within Your Presence
Longing for Your touch
A thousand days cannot compare
To one day in Your courts
Hold me now and never let me go
My Jesus, my Precious Saviour
I'm forever Yours

Getting my engine started

As usual, I'm writing at an insane hour because I just got done with a 12 hour report marathon (2 down, 1 more to go!). I've promised myself that on top of work, I will do at least 1 thing that I like/energizes me every day. Even if it means just for 15 minutes. Write. So here we go.

I'm feeling a bit of jitters/kanchiongness that I haven't been doing much wedding planning. HY and I keep promising ourselves to get around to settling guest lists and sourcing for vendors/logistics, but work has snatched me away from all these fun details for the past 1.5 months. And now I'm freaking out a little cause I'm planning to buy majority of my stuff online. Gowns, favour materials, decors, even rings - you name it. I've soooo many things saved in my taobao treasure chest now it isn't funny. Just gotta get around to evaluating the different options before I buy my first batch! Am planning to buy a few batches (spread my risk), so I really need all the time that I need for customisations and all. Oh my gosh, it's less than 5 months away!

This weekend, I will.

It's 3 more days to the end of the week

And yes, last week had felt like forever.

I wanted to cry at some points. Picking up calls from my mum at 2 am enquiring why I was not back at home yet. I had snapped "Ask my boss." Ugh. Conducting focus groups on the value of their work - someone shared "My first job was at a market research firm and I did not find meaning in it at all. I had to work till midnight with deadlines at 8 am in the morning.. I quit after 3 months." My colleague and I shot each other pitiful looks. Sounds familiar eh?

Moderating focus groups has always been my nervy spot. I guess I haven't gotten good enough to enjoy the whole process. Coupled with the fact that 3 weeks out of the past 1.5 months had been spent on hours after work in the moderation room. I'm truly glad that it is over, for now.

And once I'm done with the crazy reporting period (This thursday!), I would like to take some leave, wind down, go for a massage, spend a day with myself, and do cathartic things that actually refresh me - reading, pilates, worshipping God and spending time with Him, sewing and painting, singing or something. Without the unnecessary stress doing damage to my kidneys and stomach. I feel my kidneys literally hurting for some reason, and my stomach has been protesting with the infrequent meals.

Well, I guess I'm rather satisfied with the fact that I do alot of things well. But if I had a choice, I'd rather be really super duper duper genius at something (that happens to be sellable too of course). I'm more inclined to think of things in the arts, but I guess that has always been my inclination anyway. Like play an instrument really well, or sing super super well or something. Then my path in life would have been obvious. Now as it is, I'm floundering - I do okay well at quite alot of things - always floundering in between interests. And since I don't make no dough out of my arts-related interest, I end up going into an academic interest in numbers/ trends/ human behaviour. Which I am alright at, but not particularly good at. Plus, it takes away a huge chunk of my energy! It does nothing to refresh my soul, or to renew my spirit. Ah, this bothers me so much. :(

Let me divert such heavy thoughts to a freer day after the heavy workload.

-----

On a happier note, I've created an Instagram account just for the sole purpose of sharing my crafts! I realised that I have not taken many pictures of the crafts over the years, but I managed to dig some out, and Instagram's a perfect place to share all of these.

I don't remember where it all started, but from what I can remember, I've always loved how things worked and fixing things. I was intrigued by toys that actually served a real purpose, and did things like mend correction tapes in bulk when they first introduced correction tapes. While it confounded many a primary school kid, the mechanism came easy for me. On top of that, whenever I saw things that were put together, like flowers bouquets and crafts and simple furniture, I always see it as something that could simply be picked up or learnt in a matter of hours.

For that I absolutely adored it when they first introduced sewing during home econs in lower sec. I first went about mending my classmates' bobbins and sewing mess. I visited the sewing room, very often illegally, during recess by climbing through the window to finish up our sewing assignments (damn ugly cross stitch of a pot of flowers, sewn on a denim pouch). But since then it's been such a fun time experimenting with making pouches, bags, leather crafts, pvc wallets, ties, etc. And for the longest time, I've always loved buying cheap clothes that need just a bit of alteration, just cos I love adding that personal touch to what I own. And yes, I'm proud to say, it's all self-taught!

I also take birthdays, especially hy's, to be times that I'd actually find motivation to explore making something new. One extra reason to indulge in such craft projects - seeing his smiling face.

This just makes me so so happy. :)

Jade + Gold

I'm mad about design. It could be furniture, fashion, web interfaces, photography, food, gadgets, art, crafts.. you name it. I'm just extremely taken in the the visual aspect of things, though I can be a major mess sometimes. I was never really into jewelry, but but when I was searching for engagement ring designs last year, I chanced upon many indie jewelers on Etsy whose designs I really enjoyed. Actually I have always hoped that we could have more local indie jewelers in Singapore cos the main stream chain jewelry designs are either extremely generic or extremely gaudy (I love gold jewelry but I always see strange looking dragon designs), and super over-priced (compared to a neighbourhood gold shop, for the amount of gold you get in one piece, prices are really marked up)

By accident, I chanced upon this amazing local designer who specialises in jade jewellery. She designs the most amazing Peranakan-inspired pieces! My jaw really dropped when I saw this:

A photo posted by Choo Yilin (@chooyilin) on
I've got a weakness for the fusion of traditional and the new. She has done it impeccably!

I showed it to hy too because for a period of time, he kept joking that he was going to get me a jade engagement ring:
these would probably not be very suitable as engagement rings, but makes for very pretty statement pieces!

Their jade bangles too, so breathtaking:

More amazing rings:

Oh man, they made cufflinks look sexy:

Last one - they look so fun! But you might be able to find something like that on Etsy, cos it's not that oriental

I've been thinking about getting a piece of jewelry for my mum for the longest time, but I just haven't seen anything cool yet. This makes me excited.

While fawning about chooyilin, Juli showed me another jade designer - gen.k.jewelry. I still very much prefer the former's artistic direction, but gen.k also has a couple of really pretty pieces as well:
brooches!

I can't decide which one I like better:
Classy green

or lavender (one of my favourite colours)! Regardless, the yellow gold-on-jade concept is amazing. Jade is already so pretty on its own, and yellow gold just adds a hint of tradition/classiness.

One more pretty jade ring.

All my life, I've always pampered myself with cheap things like food, $30 massages and at most $45 dresses. Even my graduation night dress was a $38 toga from a blogshop which I blinged up by painstakingly sewing glass beads on. Can't even remember when was the last time I threw in $100 on anything that wasn't a need. But I am feeling like this may be my potential archilles' heel of luxury. :/ Save me now!

Actually getting acquainted with all these amazing jewelry designs makes me feel like learning how to make my own. :O

Like butter and toast.

2 months have passed, and alot has happened. I'm engaged to Han Yang :). He is some one whom I really adore, and that makes me so excited to be on this life journey with him. But there have also been so many ups and downs in our relationship which we've managed to work through, and in the process of. At the risk of sounding cliche again (but I don't care cos it's the truth!), I really thank God for watching us through in every step, coming in to guide us, and showing us so much love and grace in the process. A story for another day.

I'm a stalker, and lovin' it. Muahaha~

hi.

oh my goodness.

should you see me inanimate for the next few days, this is the reason why.

spent an unreasonably long time figuring this out while report-writing. that's 3 reports in total.

you'll get better at this, Hui Xin!

well, at least i've a 30 day spotify premium trial and worship playlist to perk me up!
i've reason to believe that God is the reason for my still rather joyful mood. this is just not humanly possible.

Psalm 118:24

Save for a 1.5 hr break where I got a rare chance to catch HY this week, I've been sitting at the desk for 11 hours.

... God, let's get through this together.

More of You, less of me.

2015.

was an extremely trying year.

i was stretched. pushed out of my comfort zone. given responsibilities that i would have liked to push away. had a huge chunk of my time taken up by work, questioned my purpose repeatedly, even as God continued to show it to me. knowing myself, I honestly don't think I could have lasted through without hanging on to that sliver of knowledge that He was sovereign in my life. there were days I refused to pray. I was so upset that i was being pushed to my limits, and as a result, not getting chances to spend time on the things that mattered - ironically - time with God, han yang, my family and friends, interests - that I got angry at Him. why put me in a job to go through such task-consuming and sometimes meaningless tasks when there were so many other pressing things in life to think about - ushering the people out there who were desperate to find hope and love in life an inch closer to what they needed?

i've seen brokenness in life. if only a fraction compared to worse situations out there, i lived through brokenness myself for 8 years. the heaviness of that emptiness, thinking that life was meaningless, and humans were nothing but a self-glorifying bunch; it sickened me. of course, outwardly, it never seemed to be that bad. i was materially sufficient, and seemed like i had it all together.

i was extremely miserable. My mind was a battlefield where negativity shrouded my every thought. i was angry, depressed, and had no control in my life despite seeing bits and pieces of hope here and there.

i confess, i think if i came from a normal and happier family, it would probably have been an easier time for me. i'm probably that individual with 2 short alleles of the 5-HTT gene that you study in psych. i thrived on stability and a loving environment, and crumbled without its existence. days of refuge in my room and living in fear - oh how i do not want to relive those moments. i only have God to thank that He saw me through with below expected but decent grades throughout these years, enough for me to pull through to be where i am now.

when you have been through this, and you learn of hope, of the existence of God and his son Jesus who loves you so much as to die for you - you cling on to that knowledge like you haven't had water in 40 days.

and when you've experienced unmerited grace - you can't stop yourself from being thankful. that was the beginning of how i crawled out of depression and hopelessness. little by little, i got healed. little by little, i began to find desire to love life, to be thankful for who i was, to see beauty in imperfections, and to embrace my painful past to look forward to greater things in the future.

the truth is that I have a story to tell. i have a story of love and hope.

and the sheer heaviness of work has drained away a huge part of the time, and desire to do so.

but i know, it's something that needs to be worked out. that in spite of such difficulties in life, it never changes who God is, and the fact that He is my saviour. He is the reason why I no longer teem with anger at the littlest things, He is the reason why I'm no longer unreasonably skeptical and spiteful towards anything I could possibly find fault with, He is the reason why I'm free from past hurts that bounded me in chains of regret and unforgiveness.

Positive change doesn't take place without some pain. He wants to mould my character, and there are still disciplines and skillsets He wants me to build up through this job. Only God knows where i will end up in a few years' time, but I would like to relish in what i'm given right now.

Keep calm, and look up.

prayer - the first key to this year.
2016, I'm ready.

I hope to do a photo recap of the year when I find some time!

hola 你好 selamat datang
